“Hey Doc, these days, I wake up with severe indigestion. It’s really serious and uncomfortable. Am I terminally sick or something? Please help me.”
“Hey Coach, I used to have very flat tummy even without working out much, but I don’t know what’s happening now, my tummy keeps getting bigger. I’ve tried exercising, it seems not to be working. Please help me.”
These are common issues that people face regularly. What could be a major cause?
Late Night Eating is a major culprit in this matter. Eating late in the night should be avoided as much as possible, because, in plain terms, late night eating is BAD.

“But coach, I get home very late at night, what am I supposed to do?” I got you covered. Read on to see what to do if you’re the type who gets home late at night.
What are the side effects of eating late at night though?
To be honest, they are few, but I’m pretty sure no one wants to experience any of them.
• Unhealthy Weight Gain
Eating late at night can easily cause fat accumulation, basically due to the fact that you don’t do much work in the night that’s sufficient enough to burn the calories you get from the food you ate that night. So, why not eat earlier in the evening, so that before you sleep, you can take a little walk, or do something little that can help the food digest real quick before you retire to bed.

So, basically, eating late at night is a major cause of belly fat. Work on that, you can also check this post to get a workout plan to get rid of belly fat and get a flat tummy.
• Indigestion
This happens mostly when you take a large portion of food and then you go to sleep almost immediately. There’s very high tendency that you will wake up with severe indigestion, especially when you eat foods like beans.
So, if you’re having indigestion issues or you want to avoid it, try to not eat late at night.
• Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) may also be worsened by late night eating.
Late night eating isn’t the main cause of GERD, but it may worsen it. GERD is a situation in which the acid in the stomach refluxes or flows back to the esophagus, which can corrode or irritate the esophageal lining.
• Tips to Avoid Late Night Eating
- Make your dinner early so you can eat early.
- Create a strict rule to not eat anything after a particular time in the night.
- Stay away from junks after taking actual dinner.
- Eat regularly during the daytime.
But then, you don’t have a choice, you just have to eat late in the night, what do you do?
There are one or two solutions, for those who just don’t have a choice but to eat late in the night, maybe due to the nature of their occupation or for whatever reason.
• When you eat late in the night, you have to wait for at least 1 hour, so the food can digest completely. So, you better find something to do for about 1-2 hours, depending on the kind of food you ate. Proteins and heavy carbs might require you to stay up for about 2 hours.
• You can take ANTACIDS. Antacids are substances that neutralizes stomach acidity and can help relieve indigestion, heartburn and stomach upset.
Also, drugs like alpha-galactosidase helps to digest foods faster. They come as pills or liquids, and you take them before eating.
Nonetheless, you might still need to stay up for some minutes.
But then, as much as possible avoid taking these foods at night:
- Proteins. They are pretty difficult to digest
- Heavy carbs
- Processed foods
- Highly fatty foods
- Soda
- Broccoli and cabbage
