What Are Proteins?
Proteins are simply muscle-building/tissue-repairing foods. They’re complex molecules, composed of amino acids and they are found in the hair, skin and many other parts of the body.
Proteins are the most important food class for muscle gain and development.
Alright, let me clear this issue up real quick before we go on.
Not only bodybuilders need to build muscle. Slim people and chubby people and even people with perfect stature need to build and strengthen their muscles. That’s why when you want to gain weight, good fitness coaches will incorporate muscle building exercises into your whole weight gain plan not because they want you to look like Arnold, but they know that a good way to gain healthy weight is to grow the muscles as this also increases strength, stamina and even general body mass.
So also the same for those who want to lose weight. It is best to lose the excess body fat and build the body muscles instead. It gives a nicer structure and outlook to the body. Are you saying you have the perfect body shape, why not maintain it, get yourself to be stronger and healthier by working your muscles.

So What Exactly Is The Role Of Proteins?
The body is largely composed of proteins. They’re the building blocks of the body. So, as much as you workout, you need to take in a lot of proteins. Read this extract from an article by Inbodyusa:
“When you want to build a healthy body, you have to get the right amount of protein. Protein is one of the most essential components of muscle development, bone density, muscle mass, and lean tissue—and that’s just the beginning. In truth, protein is necessary for all your body’s physiological functions. Today, while many people who care about health know protein matters, most don’t understand how or why. Part of that is because there are so many myths about this vital building block, especially in the fitness and weight loss worlds.“
When you exercise, the muscles wear and tear slightly, the foods that can repair this wear and tear in muscles and make it stronger and bigger are proteins. So, when you aim to increase muscle growth, proteins should be your best food.
But Then, Are We To Focus On Proteins Alone?
NO! When building muscles, we do not focus on proteins alone and then forget about the other classes of food. The most important after proteins is CARBOHYDRATES.
Carbs act as a source of fuel. Carbs give energy, they prevent muscle breakdown and degradation et al. So as much as we take in proteins, we need to take in carbohydrates too.
I always tell my clients not to do strenuous exercises, such as HIIT or strength training on empty stomach. It is advisable to take some food, preferably carbs about an hour before workout.
When Then Is The Best Time To Take Proteins?
You can take proteins anytime, but don’t take them before workout or immediately before bedtime. It can cause stomach upset.
You can take proteins, enough proteins after workout because the muscles have undergone a lot of wear and tear, and we have established that proteins are tissue repairers. So, proteins after workout are very good.
Meanwhile, WHEY PROTEINS ARE SAFE TO TAKE BEFORE, DURING AND EVEN AFTER WORKOUT.
What Is Whey Protein?
Whey protein is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, which is the by-product of production of cheese. It is highly proteinous and studies have shown that it greatly helps in massive muscle gain and body fat loss. So, if you see bodybuilders taking a particular drink in the gym, it’s most probably not water, but whey protein shake. Drinks made from protein powders such as whey is called protein shake. So, whey protein is very good for the muscles.

SUMMARY
Proteins are bodybuilders/muscle repairers. They help to revitalize and repair worn out tissues. Carbs are also important for muscle health, so as we take in much proteins, we should also take in sufficient carbs.
Proteins are best taken after workout, except protein shakes that can be taken before, during or after workout.
